Tips For Packing
-
Develop a “to do” list so you won't forget anything important.
- Get
rid of items you no longer need. Have a garage sale or donate them to a
charity.
-
Pack similar items together. Put toys with toys etc.
-
Decide what you will move yourself. ie: photos, valuables, etc.
- Use
the correct box for the item.
-
Heavy items should go in small boxes so they're easier to lift. Keep box
weight to under 50 lbs.
-
Wrap fragile items individually and pad sides of boxes.
-
Label each box on all sides. You don't know how they will be stacked.
-
Colour-code labels to indicate which room each item should go in.
Color-code a floor plan of the new home to help movers.
-
Keep all moving documents in a file, including telephone numbers, driver's
name, and van number. Keep your address books with you.
-
Back up computer files.
-
Inspect all boxes and furniture for damage upon arrival.
-
Remember, most moving companies won't take plants.
Plus, if you're
moving out of town:
- Get medical and dental record
copies, plus prescriptions for your family and
pets.
- Take copies of
children's school records.
- Consider
special needs for you pets when traveling by car.
- Let a friend
know your route.
- Carry
an ATM card for obtaining cash until you can open a
bank account.
- Close your
safety deposit box.
- Plants should
go in
boxes with holes for air circulation if you're traveling in cold weather.
